Kiwix is a free software, available for various systems including <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile\">Android<\/a>. Actually Kiwix reads <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ZIM_%28file_format%29\">ZIM files<\/a>, which are special archive files designed to store wiki pages. The whole Wikipedia in English of February 2014 is stored in a unique 42 GB ZIM file (12 GB for the text only version), which can be downloaded from the <a href=\"http:\/\/download.kiwix.org\/zim\/\">kiwix<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwix.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia_in_all_languages\/en\">website<\/a>. Can we create a customary ZIM file containing a selection of Wikipedia articles? Yes, and this can be done simply by clicking on the \"Create a Book\" link in the Print\/Export section of the left panel of a Wikipedia article. We may then add several articles to our book, and export it in various formats, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pdf\">PDF<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EPUB\">EPUB<\/a>, and of course <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ZIM_%28file_format%29\">ZIM<\/a>. Many books are already available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Wikipedia_books_%28community_books%29\">Wikipedia Community Books Collection<\/a>. There are alternatives to Kiwix, including for instance <a href=\"http:\/\/xowa.sourceforge.net\/\">Xowa<\/a>, which uses another file format similar to ZIM but which allows additionally to store Category\/Portal structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Note.<\/strong> The ZIM file format uses the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LZMA2\">Lempel\u2013Ziv\u2013Markov chain compression algorithm (LZMA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have tried recently Kiwix, a pretty nice application that allows to read Wikipedia offline.
