Beyond science, here is a list of desirable features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>read.<\/strong> free electronic access for readers<\/li>\n<li><strong>write.<\/strong> free access for authors<\/li>\n<li><strong>board.<\/strong>\u00a0frequently renewed international editorial board and editor in chief<\/li>\n<li><strong>review.<\/strong>\u00a0peer reviewed editorial process<\/li>\n<li><strong>archive.<\/strong> sustainable archival of published articles<\/li>\n<li><strong>preview.<\/strong>\u00a0full compatibility with arXiv.org<\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong><strong>metadata.<\/strong>\u00a0systematic production and diffusion of metedata according to standards<\/li>\n<li><strong>rendering.<\/strong> high quality rendering of mathematics such as with LaTeX<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">None of the available journals match all these criteria! Even the forthcoming arXiv overlay journals announced by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/episciences.org\/\">\u00e9pisciences.org<\/a>\u00a0will not fulfill the <strong>archive<\/strong>\u00a0criterion. Well established electronic journals such as <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php?q=Electronic+Journal+of+Combinatorics\">Electronic Journal of Combinatorics<\/a> or <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php?q=Electronic+Journal+of+Probability\">Electronic Journal of Probability<\/a> fail with the <strong>preview<\/strong>\u00a0criterion and the <strong>archive<\/strong> criterion (not for EJP thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lockss.org\/\">LOCKSS<\/a>). Most well known traditional journals fail with the <strong>read<\/strong> and <strong>preview<\/strong> criteria.
