I participated to a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.hku.hk\/~jeffyao\/ss\/\">French-Chinese summer school on Random <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/web.hku.hk\/~jeffyao\/ss\/\">matrix  theory  and high dimensional statistics (July 10-30)<\/a> organized by <a title=\"Zhidong Bai\" href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Zhidong+Bai+Professor\">Zhidong Bai<\/a>, <a title=\"Alice Guionnet\" href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Alice+Guionnet\">Alice Guionnet<\/a>, and <a title=\"Jianfeng Yao\" href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Jianfeng+Yao+Statistics+Professor\">Jianfeng Yao<\/a>. The summer school took place in the campus of the <a title=\"North East Normal University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northeast_Normal_University\">Northeast Normal University (NENU)<\/a>. Most participants were French or Chinese speakers, except<a title=\"Jack W. Silverstein\" href=\"http:\/\/www4.ncsu.edu\/~jack\/\"> Jack W. Silverstein<\/a> (so unique). My colleague <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Philippe+Biane\">Philippe Biane<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.univ-mlv.fr\/\">Marne-la-Vall\u00e9e<\/a> was also there. It was the occasion to interact with <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Wembo+V.+Li+probability\">Wembo Li<\/a>, <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Xiang+dong+li+manifold+probability\">X.-D. Li<\/a>, <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Tiefeng+Jiang+probability\">Tiefeng Jiang<\/a>, <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Guangming+Pan+Singapore\">Guangming Pan<\/a>, and a bunch of young mathematicians. I gave with great pleasure a course <strong><a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/16\/around-the-circular-law\/\">around the circular law<\/a><\/strong> together with <a href=\"\/scripts\/search.php\/?q=Charles+Bordenave+random+matrices\">Charles Bordenave<\/a>. Zhidong Bai worked on the circular law theorem during 13 years, see his <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Biswas-Bai.pdf\">interview by Atanu Biswas in 2006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/changchun-dinner-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2334\" title=\"Dinner in Changchun during the France-China summer school 2011\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/changchun-dinner-small.jpg\" alt=\"Dinner in Changchun during the France-China summer school 2011\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are very few tourists in Changchun, and the local people were happy to interact with foreigners, these so strange long-nose. The hospitality of the local organizers was also wonderful. Beyond slight cultural differences, I enjoyed very much my time, including in particular the food and the drinks, a bit less the incredible road traffic. I will also remember forever our visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heaven_Lake\">Changbaishan<\/a> at the North Korean borders.
